Dmitri Shostakovich

Symphony No. 1, F Minor, opus 10, First movement, Allegretto
Symphony No. 1, Second movement, Allegro
Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Symphony may be the greatest graduation project of all time. Composed at the age of 18, it took the international music world by storm. Equally impressive were the enormous obstacles the young composer had to face in the years leading up to this momentous debut.

Plus, a new commissioned work by Cheltenham composer, Paige Halliwell
Members of the Newent Orchestra invite other players to join us for this day of musical exploration, conducted by Tobias Lazenbury.

The day will include a talk about Shostakovich and the political context of his compositions, given by Toby.

Newent luthier, Phil Harding, maker and repairer of fine violins and violas, will set up a demonstration in the hall to provide a service for all string players' needs. Phil will be aided by his   apprentice maker, 
                                         daughter, Jo.

Bring your music, music stand and a packed lunch. Local shops, pubs and tea rooms will be open.

Final play-through at 3:15 p.m when the hall will be open for an audience of friends and family, free of charge.
