Programme

The Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave), Felix Mendelssohn
Felix and his friend, Karl Klingemann, traveled to the wild Hebrides Islands where Mendelssohn was inspired by Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa. Composed in 1830.

Night on a Bare Mountain, Modest Mussorgsky
Depicts a witches' Sabbath on the Bald Mountain near Kiev, in the old Russian Empire. It's a wild and terrifying party but when the sun comes up the witches vanish. Completed, 1867.

Clarinet Concerto in A Major, ‘Adagio’, W.A. Mozart,
     soloist, Claire Townshend
This force of nature is Mozart himself, here at his most lyrical in the concerto’s second movement. Composed, 1791.

Ballet of the Wood Creatures, Percy Whitlock
Whitlock beautifully captures the post-Mendelssohnian vein of Sullivan, German, Coates and Quilter, giving full rein to his melodic gift. Composed, 1939.

Symphony No. 3, Finale, Camille Saint-Saens,
     organist, Cynthia Merriman
Composed in 1886, this is the powerful conclusion to Saint-Saens’ most popular symphony: "I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again."

The Treasure of May Hill
The Treasure of May Hill

Composer, Bill Anderton.
Narrator, Phil Hemming. First performance

The narrative, interweaving with the music, is a tale about the myth of May Hill and is a collaboration with actor, Phil Hemming. There is documented evidence of a chamber on the east side of the hill, called 'Crockett's Hole'. Therein is said to be a treasure trove. The work's orchestral overture is based on an old pipe-and-tabor morris dance, whistled by Mr William Henry Watts in Tewkesbury, April, 1908, and recorded there by Cecil Sharp.
